Introduction - 5/12/2025

Happy Monday!

My name is Allie Cortino. I am a first year teacher, at a school district in Norther Westchester. I graduated Summa Cum Laude from Pace University with a Bachelors in Mathematics and a Bachelors in Adolescent Education with a concentration in Mathematics. I have always wanted to be a teacher and am currently following in my mom’s footsteps. In my free time I enjoy making social media content and coaching my 12u softball team. I have been coaching for 5 years now, and have worked with all ages. I played softball from 8 to 19 and dreamed of playing in college but COVID got in the way.

Learning goals: Math, which inherently does not use a lot of technology and media, other than the occasional use of DESMOS or EdPuzzle. I am looking to incorporate more media and media skills in my math courses to engage the students deeper than what they are currently operating at.

If we want equity and access in education, we as educators must continue on our lifelong journey of education and broaden our understanding of literacy. As a secondary math teacher, I have come to realize that literacy isn’t just about reading and writing words on a page, especially not in today’s world. The concept of “new literacies,” which includes all the different ways we create and share meaning beyond just print text, really hits home for me. (M3.1) Beyond the Screen: Connecting Math, Culture, and Digital Literacy

As a first-year high school math teacher, I have been thinking a lot lately about how we design learning that actually reaches kids, not just through screens, but in ways that really collect. With so many digital tools out there, it is easy to lean on the tech. But the bigger question for me has been: how do we go beyond the screen to create learning that is meaningful, equitable, and rooted in the real world, even in a math class? One framework that really helped me make sense of this is from Aguilera and Literacy Today (2017). They talk about digital literacy through three lenses: on the screen, behind the screen, and beyond the screen . It is not just about what students see, like a graphing calculator app or a math video.
